Samurai and ninja-themed video games have been always been popular. Developer Koei Tecmo makes a ton of them, with franchises such as Ninja Gaiden and Samurai Warriors. Last year, Koei Tecmo released an action game called Rise of the Ronin, exclusively on PS5 and PC. It takes place in the mid-1800s during the Bakumatsu period and tells the story about Japan abandoning its traditional values in the face of western expansion. Over at Newegg, you can grab the PC version for 40%, bringing the price down from $49.99 to $29.99. Rise of the Ronin’s story is filled with rich historical nuance that’s found in similar games like Assassin’s Creed Shadows. It’s about a pair of twins who get separated after they botch an assassination mission. One of them stays behind as a sacrifices in order for the other to escape, who is now the protagonist. The protagonist later realizes that their sibling survived, and now is on the search to reunite with them. Players can also choose to side with pro-shogunate or anti-shogunate forces to influence the main story’s branching narrative, which gives Rise of the Ronin more value and replayability. Its slick sword slicing gameplay is augmented by the impressive selection of skills, letting players tailor to their own playstyle.
Senior software writer Gabriel Zamora awarded it a “Good” rating. In our Rise of the Ronin review, he said, “Rise of the Ronin offers an enticing, streamlined take on complex Team Ninja action, but it will prove somewhat disappointing if you’re a fan of mechanically rich combat.” Act fast, as this deal won’t last long!
